Beauty Is Vain

Proverbs 31:30: Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.

1 Peter 3:1: Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives; 2 While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear. 3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; 4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

When I was a child I was given some medication that I believe were anti-biotics. It put an unattractive pale green coating on my teeth that lasted a few days. I had not yet learned to brush my teeth properly. I had an older brother who poked fun at my green teeth so I tried to smile without showing my teeth. 70 plus years later I sometimes do that and can often feel unattractive. (That can actually help a bit with humility). Happily, many brothers and sisters in Christ don*t see me as I see myself.

Charles William Eliot, former president of Harvard University, had a birthmark on his face that bothered him greatly. As a young man, he was told that surgeons could do nothing to remove it. Someone described that moment as *the dark hour of his soul.* Eliot*s mother gave him this helpful advice: *My son, it is not possible for you to get rid of that hardship...But it is possible for you, with God*s help, to grow a mind and soul so big that people will forget to look at your face.*

Yes, it*s true. All of us have things we*d love to change about ourselves. And many of us tend to spend an awful lot of time and money trying to change, fix and cover those things up. But I think there is much truth in Mrs. Eliot*s words. When we are shining boldly for the Lord, I don*t believe anyone sees them!
